Our Great Adventure "Kenya 2009" comes to an end for now!

Thanks to everyone who "Gave, Prayed and Went" God allowed us to see and experience so many wonderful things over the past two weeks!!

The Pictures below are from our time in London on the way home { being asked to leave Harrods for wearing our JESUS. Shirts!!}, Our Last Good Bye's to the Children at the "JESUS. Hobbs House Of Hope", Walking the Cross in one of the Largest Slums in Nairobi and our Final Day at the Basketball Camp Celebration over 2500 children attended!

We are all doing very well, it has been very difficult to Blog, post pictures, email or even text everyone.
God has been so good to our Team over the past few days. The Children at J.HHOH our so excited to see us everyday and the work projects are going well.
The past two day we have help with Medical Camps and seen God do some incredible things.
Keep us in your prayers and I hope to be able to post pictures SOON!!!!!!!!!

We made it to Kenya!!!

After a long 16 hrs of flights and 11hrs in airports we are in Kenya. The Team is rested and and ready for the Great Adventure. Sunday, Scott, Julie and Lauren lead the Children's Bible Study and Billy preached the message in the Church service at the "Jesus. Hobbs House of Hope" Children's Home. After Church the Team played with the Children till 6:00pm.
Keep us in your prayer as we seek God's heart for the days ahead.
The Internet service is very poor so I do hope to post pictures and up-dates daily if possible.

Getting Ready for our Mission Trip to Kenya in June.

During our first week, our Team from ACCF will be working with the Orphan Children at the "JESUS. Hobbs House Of Hope", building Staff housing, "Walking the Cross" through the city of Kitengela, leading the Sunday service at the Orphanage and holding a two day Medical Camp.

Our second week we will be leading a Basketball Camp at the Hope Center in Nairobi. Last year we had over 2000 children attend, praying for 3000 this year. We will also be "Walking the Cross" through one of the largest Slums in Kenya, Speaking at a Pastors Gathering, Speaking at a Ladies Luncheon, leading the Sunday service at Joy Miracle Center Church, Feeding the Orphan Street Children, which are called "Children of the Dirt" and visiting Hospitals in Nairobi.

I will plan to post pictures and up-dates as often as possible during our trip.

Please keep us in your prayers as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ!

It's Sunday afternoon, November 4th and I just opened an e-mail from Darleen that contained the following information about Christmas in Mexico:

I want to let everyone know, that we are going to stay in Brownsville, TX. So the price for the whole week end is $65.00. We are needing people to drive from San Antonio to Brownsville, then the church will provide transportation from Brownsville into Mexico. November 11th we will need your $25.00 deposit or you can pay for the whole amount. Please go by the Missions table for a registration. We will need only one per family. If you have any other questions please let me know.

Larry Singletary Update!

Good morning.

It's 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, August 2nd, and I just got off the phone with Terry Singletary.

GOOD NEWS! Larry is in possession of his passport and should be arriving in Houston this Sunday evening!

Praise God for answered prayer! Here's the short story:

Evidently, when Larry (and the two young men who have been working with him) arrived in Enebbe a couple of days ago, he went to the bank to withdraw some money for the return trip to the United States. He then took his two friends to the airport to catch their flight back to the US. (He was scheduled on a different and later flight.)

Well, when he began packing and organizing his things, he noticed that his passport was missing. After looking repeated through his possessions, he assumed that it must have been stolen and called Terry to ask for prayer.

Not being in possession of your passport in any foreign country is a serious matter. In this circumstance - no passport, no flight!

So, last night at church, Alamo City went to prayer.

As Larry began to retrace his steps, the last place he remembered having his passport was in the bank in Entebbe.

So, this morning, when the bank opened, he went back. Check this out - as soon as he walked into the bank lobby some bank officials immediately met him and asked him to be seated and left him. In just a few moments they returned with his passport in hand!

He had not even spoken a word upon entering the bank! He just walked in and they knew immediately why he had come!

Apparently, the passport had not been stolen as Larry had thought, but had simply been left at the bank the day before!

But wait, there's more!

Larry did indeed miss his flight this morning. But before he went to the bank, he had made a reservation on a later flight - in faith - even though he didn't have his passport.

Many times, changing flights at the last minute can be very expensive, especially overseas! But the Lord had seen fit to provide Larry with a ticket that had a "no change in fare amount" in the event that his travel plans changed.

The change of missing his original flight this morning and re-booking for a later departure isn't going to cost any additional money!

Hallelujah!

I'm sure that I've omitted several details but won't it be such a blessing to get to hear the real and full story from Larry when he arrives stateside?

Thank you for praying, Alamo City! There is power in agreed prayer!

(Perhaps the passport had been stolen after all and the Lord intervened in history by supernaturally placing it back at the bank! Who knows - with God, all things are possible!)

Yucatan Mission Team 2007

There were 85 decisions to follow Christ with hundreds of Seeds of the Gospel scattered through out the Progeso Yucatan Mexico.

God is doing a wonderful work in the Progreso area and we are asking that you will keep Brother Beto who is a layman shepherding the Church "Bienvenidos a Eliacim" in your prayers.

Thanks to all the group that gave their week to be used as an instrument of God for His glory. Keep your eyes on Jesus and He will continue to guide your path.

Hi everybody...

David Guion here. (No, I'm not in Mexico.)

But I did just speak with Billy Honc over the phone.

Billy says that everyone is having a great experience and that the Lord is blessing the team.

Even though it has been raining, 62 children have attended the Backyard Bible Clubs and 4 teenagers prayed to receive Christ today after a drama was presented this afternoon.

So far they have been unable to access the internet. Billy said that he will plan to try again tomorrow morning. So, you might want to check back around lunch-time tomorrow.

If I hear any other news, I'll post it right here!

Lord willing, in just a very few hours, this chapter in our mission to Kenya, Africa, will come to an end.

Two days ago, we were standing on African soil at the JESUS. Hobbs’ House of Hope preparing to leave that amazing place.

Yesterday, we arrived in London and took advantage of our long lay over by visiting Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the Tower of London. We feel so blessed to have been able to take a moment toward the end of our journey to experience a taste of the rich history that exists in this country.

This afternoon, we board our flights back to the USA and to our families, loved ones and friends.

Each of us have been challenged and changed by what we’ve experienced. We want to express our gratitude and appreciation to everyone for your prayer covering during our trip - it has been a great source of encouragement to know that you are standing with us in prayer. What the Lord has done and is doing in Africa is amazing! Please continue to pray for Kenya!

Although we are ready to come back to the United States, we are quite aware that we are leaving a portion of our heart in Africa - and are bringing a portion of Africa with us as well.

We look forward to telling you our stories very soon.

5:30 p.m. Kenya Time, Friday

We have checked out of the YMCA Nairobi and are about to take our evening meal at The Java House before heading to the airport. London is our next stop and then San Antonio on Sunday evening!

The past two days have been amazing! God is moving in Kenya, Africa, and we have been so blessed to be participants in what He is doing in this place.

Yesterday, we had several hundred children come to the Basketball Camp and afterward we walked the cross through the neighborhood behind the gym/church. Time will not allow for a full report right now but suffice it to say - it was AWESOME!

This morning, we went back out the House of Hope. Much progress is being made on the facilities. Having a brand new generator is a huge blessing! (Pictures from this morning will be posted later - sorry!)

Although we love Africa, we are ready to head for home - especially those of us who've been here for two weeks now. We miss all of you and can't wait to tell you of our experiences.

So again, after eating at The Java House in a moment, it's off to London!

We've had an amazing three days of Basketball Camp!

Over these three days, more than 1100 kids have participated in the camps and (best we can tell) the vast majority of them are not repeat attenders - over 900 students!

Yesterday, David Guion and Billy Honc spoke at another Pastor's Conference and then joined everyone for a feast at The Carnivore! It was such a great conclusion to the day!

Tomorrow is the closing day of the camp and we're anticipating a very large number to attend. Please pray for an abundant harvest in response to the gospel being powerfully presented!

These days have exceeded our expectations! All glory to God!

We may have one final opportunity to walk the cross tomorrow - as the Lord wills.

Everyone is doing well.

(Darleen wants to remind everyone from Weeks One and Two - don’t forget to take your malaria pills today!)

Whew! What a whirlwind the past three days have been!

Obviously, we have been unable to access the Internet until now.

In this post, I will attempt to update you from the events over the weekend.

On Friday evening, seventeen out of the twenty-five Alamo City team members boarded an airplane to London are now presumably safely home in San Antonio - sleeping off their “jet-lag!”

Before they left, most of the team spent the day Friday relaxing and preparing for the journey home while a handful of us ventured out the House of Hope specifically to pray over the water well there.

At mid-afternoon we checked out of our wonderful accommodations at Lukenya Getaway and headed to Nairobi for one final meal together in Africa before going to the airport.

As the entire Crossbridge team and seventeen Alamo City team members departed Africa for home, four more people flew into Nairobi from San Antonio - joining the eight of us who have remained behind for the evangelistic basketball camps to be held this week.

The twelve of us moved into the YMCA, Nairobi, in order to be closer to the basketball camp facilities. Although we’re extremely grateful for our lodging, we do miss our Lukenya Getaway tents!

On Saturday morning, we were treated to a safari through the Nairobi National Park - the largest National Park located within a city in the world - so we’re told. We then visited the Masai Market and concluded our day by eating supper at The Java House, Nairobi - which, by the way, has outstanding fresh-brewed Kenyan coffee!

Yesterday morning, we once again attended Joy Miracle Centre Church where Billy Honc had an opportunity to preach. We also assisted in feeding the “Children of the Dirt.”

Basketball camps begin today and, Lord willing, we will have more opportunities to walk the cross and share the gospel during the week.

To the seventeen of you who are home now: thank you for an amazing first week! We miss you already and wish that you were all still here!

Please pray for the gospel to go forth in power this week during the camps and cross walks.

The BLOG will be updated this week as often as we’re able.

GO, SPURS, GO!

The safari yesterday was incredible!

We toured Lake Nakuru National Park and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. We ended the day with a feast at a restaurant named, "Carnivore." ('nuff said)

Today we will depart Lukenya Getaway as most of the group returns to San Antonio and the basketball group arrives here in Africa. Not sure when we'll have Internet access again so... stay tuned!

What else can I say - God is amazing!

We had a very busy day!

Several of us began the day by walking the cross through Kitengela Township. We stopped along the way many times to preach in the streets and it was amazing!

Others went on to the Hobbs House to work on the chicken houses which, after three days of hard labor and by the grace of God, have framing in place for the roofs and walls!

We also hosted a Medical Clinic on the Hobbs House property today. Many Masai came from the area to receive treatment for a variety of ailments.

Additionally, three schools were visited by teams who ministered with songs, testimonies, skits and by handing out shoes.

This evening, we celebrated the day with a wonderful meal on the outdoor patio at Lukenya Getaway!

Tomorrow, Lord willing, we plan to go on safari in an area located about three hours drive from here. Everyone has been working very hard since we arrived so we are looking forward to a brief break in order to enjoy some wildlife in this most amazing country!

Well, it's Wednesday morning here and everyone is still asleep in their tents. I was unable to post anything last night because the Internet was down here at the Lukenya Getaway.

So, here's the post:

Tuesday was another incredible day!

We arrived at the JESUS. Hobbs House of Hope Orphanage and went right to work again on the two chicken houses - affectionately dubbed, "The Hilton" and "Motel 6."

Later on in the morning, Chris Dillashaw and some of his group from Crossbridge Community Church (who are here with us from San Antonio) led out in a Pastor's Conference. Billy Honc spoke at a Masai Church Service which was held on the Hobbs House of Hope property. In the afternoon, two different groups went to two schools to share the gospel through skits, songs, and testimonies.

All in all, a very long and profitable day!

Today, Wednesday, a small group of us plan to walk the cross through Kitengela Township to share the gospel and encourage believers. Others will continue the construction work on the orphanage. I believe there is also to be another presentation an area school.

Please join us in praying for His kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven! It should be another glorious day!

We love you all and are praying for the service tonight back in San Antonio.

11:10 p.m. Kenya Time

It was a pleasantly cool morning here - a gentle breeze was blowing and (same as every morning) the African birds awakened us as our alarm clock (only problem - there's no "snooze" button!)

At last, as of today, everyone in our group has finally been to the JESUS. Hobbs House of Hope Orphanage! What an incredible place! You just cannot seem to believe what Jesus is preparing in this amazing setting! The sense of His heart for the abandoned children of Kenya is evident everywhere on the property!

David Guion spent the afternoon speaking at a Pastor's Conference - as Chris Dillashaw plans to do tomorrow. I believe Billy Honc will be speaking tomorrow as well - at another function. What a precious group of brothers these African Pastors are!

Tomorrow, we plan to return to the orphanage and then (at some point during the day) some of us will go speak and minister in at least two area schools.

Please keep praying that we will continue to boldly proclaim the Lord's name in this wonderful nation! Hallelujah!

First full day here was amazing!

After breakfast, we all went downtown to visit the site of the August 7, 1998 US Embassy bombing. Very moving and reminiscent of Oklahoma City and Ground Zero in New York City.

Then, while one group went to walk the cross, another group went to assist with a free medical clinic which had been set up by Pastor Peter and his church here in Nairobi.

After a long day, we reconnected, visited a market area and then returned home for supper, showers and a good night's sleep - Lord willing! (African tents make for wonderful accommodation's - really!)

Arrived this morning in Nairobi by plane and then took a bus to our lodging where we'll be staying for the next few days - great tents!

Lunch has been served (we're eight hours ahead of San Antonio here), some naps are currently being taken, a Group Meeting is scheduled for later this afternoon, and we hit it hard tomorrow morning with the first Medical Clinic and walking the cross!

At this posting, there remains one full month in the 2005 Hurricane Season. Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma have each had a devastating effect on the United States of America.

Alamo City Christian Fellowship is committed as a congregation to see God's glory displayed in the midst of such tragedy.

To that end, we encourage everyone to continue participating in the Relief Effort by volunteering and by contributing financially to reputable Christian organizations.

Even though news media outlets have moved to cover other legitimate stories, the ongoing needs of evacuees in our city are astronomical.

The trauma of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have placed in the City of San Antonio new neighbors with a slightly different cultural background and a unique set of needs. Current estimates suggest that well over 2,500 families have (are) settled in our city with over 8,000 new residents. Not only do our new friends have a unique culture to be assimilated but also we may have the opportunity to impact the economic wellness of many.

This summit presents an opportunity for care givers, leaders, and educators of our great city to sit beside the task of this mass integration and prepare a well reflected response.

The summit will unfold in two dimensions:

First - is to examine our task from a clinical reflection…
(What in the world just happened?)

Second – is to brainstorm a practical response…
(What in the world are we going to do about it?)

It is our sincere hope that after the summit many in our community will have had a chance to reframe this trauma from one of pain, loss and destruction to one of opportunity, challenge and growth. By using careful reflection we as a community can find an optimistic reality in the midst of this pessimistic situation.

Tuesday Morning Update...

This e-mail report came to us this morning from Susie Roye of Blood-n-Fire, San Antonio:

October 11, 2005

There is still so much going on in regards to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.........

Mark has been in Bridge City, Texas for two weeks now, with our Mobile Kitchen, 3 large smoker pits, heading up a team comprised of BnF Teams from Indiana and Minnesota, 4 college students from California and of course some Texans. They have averaged 2000 meals a day, mostly being served to area residents. These people are living in their storm damaged homes with no power or water, and are thriving on the hot, fresh meals we are able to provide. This past week our daughter Ashley was able to join him, as well as Robert Reyes from our BnF Core Team. A friend named "Angel" has provided her R.V. for our team to live in on site in Bridge City.

Locally in San Antonio, through your generosity, we have had the privilege of providing household items for the many evacuees that have left the shelter to make a new life in apartments across the city that the government is providing for them.

We have also been busy providing transportation to and from job interviews for some. When needed we have been able to purchase suitable clothing and shoes for their job interviews. We bought a pair of business shoes so one lady could look more professional for her interview. Antother example: we met LaRhonda, mother of 5, in the shelter several weeks ago and found out she worked for the New Orleans Times Picayune Newspaper. We simply emailed the San Antonio Express News on her behalf, took her to interview, and today was her first day on the job, working in distribution!

Thanks to Hasbro Toy Company, we have been able to initiate a program we've named "Toys 2 Take Home". As families leave the shelters to go to their apartments, we are able to give the children new Hasbro toys and games to take to their new homes!

Life goes on, and so does the News cycle.........but the needs are still here...
....people are still trying to put their lives back together.
We can still use more volunteers during the week.........just let us know if you are interested.

Details about the additional Katrina & Rita evacuees coming to San Antonio are very difficult to come by. For the past week, there have been virtually no stories carried in the local or state media outlets.

Alamo City - Just because the news media has moved on to other legitimate stories* does not mean that we will not continue to be made aware of very serious needs that exist. There are many Katrina and Rita evacuees that are still in San Antonio.

* Please pray for the survivors of the recent earthquake in South Asia. At this posting, it is being reported that an estimated 20,000 people have been killed. That number is expected to rise. Pakistan was especially hard hit. Additionally, servere flooding in Central America has taken the lives of hundreds of people.

Sunday Evening Update...

"WINDSOR PARK WORSHIP"

The Windsor Park Mall Shelter continues to house just under 200 residents and, once again, we had a wonderful time of worship on the Windsor Park Mall parking lot. Unlike past Windsor Park Worship services, very few evacuees attended.

We were told that most of the resident evacuees may have been packing in preparation to be moved to Kelly USA tomorrow.

NOTE: As of this post, the report of the proposed move of residents is assumed to be correct. We have no information about any planned closure of the Windsor Park Mall Shelter at this time.

As of this morning, we understand that there are less than 200 residents at the Windsor Park Mall Shelter. And it is unclear whether or not any of the anticipated 12,000 evacuees expected in San Antonio will be received at Windsor Park.

6:30 p.m. - Outdoor Service begins!
7:30 p.m.(ish) - Volunteers take down and load chairs, sound system, etc. and return to Alamo City.

IMPORTANT:

Please pick up any trash. Where possible, let's leave the Windsor Park Mall parking lot in better shape than we found it.
Alamo City: Please minister to the residents who attend from the shelter in pairs or small groups, not individually.
Please watch your children - after all, it is a "parking lot."
Please do not remain on the Windsor Park Mall parking lot alone after the service is over.

Volunteering

There continues to be a possibility of additional evacuees coming into San Antonio area shelters over the next few days - some reports of up to 12,000.

If you have registered as a Red Cross Volunteer, we are asking you to please continue to volunteer. The residents in the shelters need you. Alamo City efforts remain focused on the Windsor Park Mall Shelter.

If you are registered with the Red Cross as a Hurricane Relief Chaplain (and have completed the required Chaplain's Training Course), please continue to visit the San Antonio area shelters. We believe that each shelter has an on-site "Chaplain's Office" that can advise you as to specific needs.

As we've said before, this will be a long process. Please continue to pray and participate. What a blessing it is to see so many Alamo City faces involved in this relief effort!

Out of the Shelters and into New Homes

Below is some information which came out of a very strategic meeting between several San Antonio area pastors and a representative from the San Antonio Housing Authority (SAHA), Lori Mendez.

Two specific areas of need are listed which may be of particular interest to the Alamo City church family.

First, volunteers are needed to transport San Antonio’s newest friends to and from available housing locations. (Some restrictions will apply.)

Second, Alamo City families and other caring groups are needed to “adopt” our newest families. They will need help with furniture, kitchen supplies, clothes, and all things necessary to function in our community.

It is anticipated that our love for Jesus Christ will come through in our expressions of love for them, and that we will welcome them into the fellowship of our churches.

Devotional Thoughts on Katrina, Rita and Terrorism

These are days of unprecedented calamity in our nation. The following is presented with the hope that Alamo City folks will be encouraged to "press on" in hope and faith as we serve Him today:

ALAMO CITY HURRICANE RELIEF EFFORT CONTINUES:

Volunteers are still needed as more people arrive in San Antonio from the US Gulf of Mexico coast.

This report comes from Blood-n-Fire, San Antonio. Alamo City has been partnering with and supporting Blood-n-Fire for many years. Ever since Hurricane Katrina hit, we have stayed in very close contact with them. Here's the latest report - slightly edited:

"Mark Roye and the Blood-n-Fire Team are now in the "Golden Triangle" of Texas are witnessing events unlike anything any of us have ever seen as result of Hurricane Rita..........

They set up two smoker pits to feed the Police, Firefighters, utility workers, and got some music going. No one from the public is allowed to enter the hurricane zone yet.

They are in Bridge City, between Orange and Port Arthur, in the parking lot of "Grace Center."

There is no power and no water in the area. Trees and powerlines are down everywhere.

BUT THEN.......

.....while cooking briskets and pork loins on our smokers, people started coming out of the woods,walking down the roads, coming toward "Grace Center."

.....toward the food they smelled, toward the music they could hear... asians, hispanics, blacks, whites...

.....these people rode out the storm, and until now had not heard from anybody for three days...

.....all of their homes suffered bad damage.

.....as of nighfall Tuesday, the team from Blood-n-Fire were the first outsiders into this area...

.....as of nightfall Tuesday, the Blood-n-Fire Team had fed at least 300 residents of Bridge City...

.....thankfully through your generosity, we had the means to feed 300 unexpected guests!........

.....they came and came, walking up out of nowhere, so glad someone came to them...

.....then they started bringing meat from their freezers that was still good:
Catfish, Shrimp, Red Fish, Hamburger patties, Pot Roasts, whatever they brought us we put that on our smokers, everybody ate their fill, everybody shared!

Finally about 9 pm it was just too dark to do anything else.

Life began again today, Wednesday at daybreak. More people for lunch, word has gotten out!

FEMA Reps did come and ask if Blood-n-Fire would represent them in Bridge City.

Well.... OK, why not?!

Per our request in the last post, the Lord has supplied at least one big-rig truck driver to assist in getting supplies to the Texas Gulf of Mexico coast. Thank you for praying that this need would be supplied!

There are additional supplies which still need to be loaded and delivered into that region.

Wednesday Morning Update...

As of last night, about 4,200 people are still living in both the Kelly U.S.A. and Windsor Park Mall Shelters. Almost 15,000 people have been housed in shelters in San Antonio since Hurricane Katrina struck.

San Antonio Express-News Staff Writer, Mariano Castillo, is reporting that buses from the Port Arthur area are headed toward San Antonio today. [Read the article here.]
